OSS Europe Highlights: From RISC-V to Edge Security
Exploring Embedded Systems and RISC-V at Open Source Summit Europe
Last week, I had the pleasure of attending Open Source Summit Europe, a Linux Foundation event in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. Unlike FrOSCon, which focused more on mobile devices and general open source software, this summit had a strong focus on embedded systems and RISC-V, providing a fresh perspective on where the industry is heading.
I attended several talks that stood out for their technical depth and practical insights:
“Mainframes Aren’t Dead, They’re Just Running Kubernetes Now”: A fascinating look at modern mainframe evolution.
“TPM is No Silver Bullet in Embedded Device Security”: Highlighting the challenges of security in constrained devices.
“The Cost of Security: Measuring and Reducing Boot Time Impact”: Exploring the trade-offs between security and performance and boot time.
“Implementing Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast on Embedded Linux Systems”: A practical deep dive into modern low-power audio protocols, exploring how LE Audio and Auracast can be integrated and optimized on embedded Linux devices.
“Zero Trust at the Edge: Bridging Industrial Systems with Verifiable Credentials and OpenZiti” by Shane Deconinck: One of the most intriguing talks, showing how edge systems can adopt secure, verifiable credentials.
Siemens’ “Easily Generating Debian-based Embedded Systems”: A practical insights for building embedded Linux systems efficiently.
“Software Defined Hardware on Heterogeneous SoCs Using OpenAMP”: Exploring innovative approaches for flexible embedded hardware and demonstrating how systems can be extended to support additional protocols and interfaces entirely through software.
One of the most memorable aspects of the summit was attending together with my son, making it not only a technical learning experience but also a chance to spend quality time together in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Beyond the talks, there were many opportunities to connect with like-minded people, share experiences, and exchange ideas. Highlights included a visit to the FoodHall in Amsterdam, where speakers and attendees mingled over great food, creating an amazing atmosphere of collaboration and curiosity.
Events like Open Source Summit Europe and FrOSCon are a powerful reminder that continuous learning thrives in community and that exploring new technologies hands-on is one of the best ways to stay ahead in IT and OT infrastructure.
